What Does The Bible Say About Abortion?

Once again abortion is in the news.  We must be aware now more than ever what the Bible says about the taking of the innocent life of an unborn child of God.

The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion. However, there are numerous teachings in Scripture that make it abundantly clear what God’s view of abortion is.

Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knew us before He created us.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; and before you were born I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

_ Psalm 139:13-16 speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb. These words are so beautiful….

13 You brought my inner parts into being; You wove me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise you, for You made me with fear and wonder; marvelous are Your works, and You know me completely. 15 My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and intricately put together in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw me unformed, yet in Your book all my days were written, before any of them came into being.

God’s character goes into the creation of every person. We should have as much respect for ourselves and our unborn children as our Maker has for us.

God takes abortion very seriously. The Bible prescribes the same penalty (death) for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb as for someone who commits murder.

This clearly indicates that God considers a baby in the womb to be as human as a full-grown adult.

Exodus 21:22-25

22 If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that her child is born prematurely, yet there is no serious injury, then he shall be surely punished in accordance with what the woman’s husband demands of him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 But if there is any serious injury, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand…”

For the Christian, abortion is not a matter of a woman’s right to choose. It is a matter of the life or death of a human being made in God’s image.

Genesis 9:6

Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for God made man in His own image.

 Two Arguments to Consider:

  1. “What about cases of rape and/or incest?”

First of all, rape and/or incest is horrible!

Should we ask ourselves if two wrongs make a right?

There are options: adoption, families unable to have children, the child’s mother!

“What about when the life of the mother is at risk?”

Very difficult question to answer, who do you sacrifice? The mother or the child?

This reason represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the abortions done in the world today. Over 95 percent of the abortions performed today involve women who simply do not want to have a baby.  That is so sad.

Remember that God is a God of miracles and a God of wisdom.  No matter what reason you think you have for giving up the life of your unborn child please pray to the Lord for wisdom.

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without criticism, and it will be given to him.

By “wisdom,” James is talking not only about knowledge, but about the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances.  Whenever we need wisdom, we can pray to God and He will supply what we need.  We can ask God’s wisdom to guide our choices.

Wisdom begins with respect for God, leads to right living, and results in the ability to tell right from wrong.  So if abortion is on your mind the please pray to the Lord for his divine guidance.

Remember that the sin of abortion is no less forgivable than any other sin.

Through faith in Christ, all sins can be forgiven.  The woman, the man who encouraged the abortion, and the doctor who has performed it…. yes, all of these are guilty of this sin…and they can all be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus

and so when we ask Him for forgiveness, He freely gives it. This is not because we deserve it, but because this is the loving nature of our Lord.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

How can a woman experience healing and recovery after an abortion?

Sad to say, having an abortion and regretting it later is an all-too-common experience.

There are many reasons to want an abortion…because the woman is scared, confused, desperate, and extremely vulnerable; but none are justifiable.

In their search for answers, they are fooled into believing that unborn children are expendable “lumps of tissue,” not really pre-born human beings. The revelation usually comes later in the form of depression.

While what has been done cannot be undone, women can experience healing and recovery after an abortion.

The God of all comfort and healing is more than able to ease the sorrow and pain of an abortion and can restore women to life and joy.

The good news for anyone who has had an abortion, is that God offers forgiveness to anyone who asks for it.

Romans 3:22

22 This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction.

  1. That says it all. I thank God that I never had an abortion or found myself in a situation that it was an option. Cannot imagine Such inner pain and sorrow. Praise God for his forgiveness and love. Mary

  2. In today’s world, there is no reason for a woman to have an unwanted baby. There’s birth control available. People need to realize that they need to be responsible for protecting themselves until the time is right for children to be brought into the world.
